How safe is Poloniex,
really?
Instead of a vague 'trusted' badge, we grade Poloniex on five concrete, checkable criteria — each with sources. Here's exactly how it scores.
Criterion by criterion, with sources
- ✗
Regulation
No licence from a financial regulator to hold client funds. Poloniex's user agreement (revised 1 April 2026) is governed by the laws of Panama and shuts out the US, the UK, every EU country and Singapore. Regulators have acted against it more than once — in August 2021 Poloniex LLC settled SEC charges of running an unregistered securities exchange ($10.4 million), in 2021 the Ontario Securities Commission brought allegations against Polo Digital Assets, Ltd. for operating without registration, and in May 2023 Poloniex LLC paid $7.59 million to settle US sanctions violations. Proof-of-Reserves
Poloniex publishes a monthly Merkle-tree proof of reserves with a per-coin breakdown and a tool to verify your own balance. The 1 October 2026 snapshot shows a total reserve ratio of 100.48% (BTC 100.10%, ETH 100.59%, USDT 100.32%). The report is self-published; no auditor is named. Source →

Flexible withdrawal
Earn's flexible products can be redeemed at any time; Fast Redemption credits the spot account immediately. Source 1 → Source 2 →
- ✗
Insurance Fund
No protection fund covering hacks or losses of client funds is described on Poloniex's own pages. A $100 million "User Protection Fund" was reported in April 2026, but neither its wallet nor the conditions under which it pays out have been published, so we do not count it. Source →

Track record (2+ years incident-free)
Operating since 2014. On 10 November 2023 hackers drained Poloniex's hot wallets; PeckShield estimated the loss at around $125 million, and Poloniex said it would fully reimburse users. An earlier breach in March 2014 took 12.3% of its bitcoin. Since November 2023 — almost three years — we found no hack, withdrawal freeze or loss of client funds, so it passes our two-year rule. The regulators' settlements are counted under regulation. Source 1 → Source 2 → Source 3 →
